The Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaw series has helped launch street-legal drag racing to the next level. First with its controversial street racing show, Street Outlaws that is based in Oklahoma or the 405 as the cast likes to refer to their hometown. The success in the ratings department pushed the producers to create two spinoffs with a similar format—Street Outlaws: New Orleans and Street Outlaws: Memphis. While one was canceled after two seasons, the original show and the Memphis version are still earning favorable ratings, even after the original has aired ten seasons.
A special Street Outlaws: Bristol was started in 2017 to bring the best that the TV show offered to the track to face-off against the growing number of No Prep racers. The event was an astounding success so in 2018 the producers threw caution to the wind, stopped at the bank, and grabbed $200,000 cash for the second special event at Bristol Dragway. The concept helped spawn yet another spinoff series, this one called Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings and it has turned outlaw street racers and part-time competitors into a traveling group of professional drag racers.
The Street Outlaws: Bristol special event aired on January 1, 2019 and while the Nielsen ratings aren’t available yet, the buzz on social media suggests the move on-track isn’t hurting the show’s popularity. Check out the video above to get a unique perspective on the race as it isn’t the official Discovery Channel production, but enjoyable nonetheless.
