Alton Clements captured a second Edelbrock Renegade championship with his 1989 Mustang LX coupe. It is powered by a Vortech supercharger and he took the time to sit down with Race Pages Digital for a quick interview on his recent accomplishment.
The car is powered by a 363ci small-block Ford that he has topped off with a .650-inch lift camshaft, Airflow Research 220 cylinder heads, and an Edelbrock intake manifold. Clements turned to a Vortech V-30 series supercharger and uses a Supercharger Store gear-drive unit to spin it. Chilling the boost is a massive in-car mounted air-to-water intercooler while a Holley EFI Dominator engine management system keeps control of the engine.
This year, Clements has taken home the class wins during the WyoTech NMRA Ford Motorsport Nationals, NMRA Super Nationals, and the prestigious Nitto Tire NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing. He capped off his championship season as a runner-up at the Nitto Tire NMRA All-Ford World Finals. There are rumors that he won’t be defending his Renegade title and is stepping into VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw with another Vortech-powered racecar.
