Poston Pulls Off Street King Championship as Newcomer to Class

One of the things Cody Poston loves most about taking part in NMCA events is forming friendships with fellow racers.
 
It’s also an opportunity to race with his father, Tim Poston.
 
But Cody is also competitive to the core, and he wants to do well and win in his commanding Camaro, and by all accounts, he has.
 
After success in NMCA TorqStorm Superchargers True Street, Proform Rumble and MagnaFuel Open Comp, Cody dove into LME Street King presented by Chevrolet Performance in 2022, and it was a magnificent move on his part.
 
He qualified in the tenth spot with a 9.32 on a 9.25 index at the NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem presented by Holbrook Racing Engines in March at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida. He won the first round of eliminations, a double breakout, with a 9.24, and the second round of eliminations with a better reaction time than his opponent and an off-the-throttle 9.51. He later landed in the winner’s circle when Michael Pryka turned on the red light.
 
Cody then qualified in the eighth spot with a 9.35 on a 9.25 index at the Scoggin Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by MAHLE Motorsport in April at Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina, and exited eliminations in the first round with a breakout time of 9.14.


 
From there, he qualified in the third spot with 9.27 on a 9.25 index at the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing presented by Fuelab in May at World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois, and ran just a bit too quick and lost in the first round of eliminations with a breakout time of 9.23 on 9.25.
 
“The competition in Street King is great,” said Cody. “As soon you put your helmets on, you are competitors, and when you pull your helmets off, you are friends again, no matter the outcome.”
 
Cody put those two races in the rearview mirror and headed to the Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA Power Festival presented by TorqStorm Superchargers in July at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan. He qualified in the second spot with a 9.505 on a 9.50, won the first and second rounds of eliminations with a 9.52 and 9.54, and when the rain came, he turned his focus to finishing the Michigan race during qualifying at the NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Sick the Magazine in August at Summit Motorsports Park in Ohio. After turning on the red light and finishing as the runner-up against Casey Martin for the make-up race, Cody, who qualified in the eighth spot with a 9.04 on a 9.00 for the actual Ohio event, won the first round of eliminations with a 9.03 and lost in the second round of eliminations with a 9.05.
 
“After the Michigan race, we had an oil pressure issue, so we had to freshen the engine up,” said Cody, who relies on an LSX-based 350 cubic-inch engine. “Also the engine had a Whipple supercharger on it most of the season, but we broke it while testing in Norwalk, so Jessie Coulter, Alan Felts, Steve Satchell, my dad and I stayed up most of the night to change to the Magnuson supercharger that Factory Super Cars racer Tony Scott let us borrow. We have since purchased it from him.”


 
With a strong desire to seal the deal, Cody set out for the NMCA World Street Finals presented by Chevrolet Performance in September at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in Indiana, where he qualified in the eleventh spot with a lifting 13.68 on a 9.00 index. He won the first round of eliminations with a breakout time of 8.98 after his opponent went red, ran right on his index to win the second round of eliminations, stayed in the throttle to an 8.98 after his opponent went red in the semifinal round of eliminations and wheeled to the runner-up finish after breaking out with an 8.93 against Kurt Anderson in the final round of eliminations.
 
The extraordinary season-long effort resulted in the 2022 LME Street King presented by Chevrolet Performance championship for the committed Cody.
 
“I never would have thought that I would have ended up with the championship in my first year in the class, and it hasn’t fully set in yet,” said Cody. “It’s such an amazing feeling to have the opportunity to do what I love, and to be able to be a world champion makes me have even more passion for this sport. I would like to thank Jessie Coulter for all the work and help on the car off and at the track. He keeps this car in great shape and ready to go rounds at every race we go to. I would also like to thank my 
parents, Tim and Sharon, for all of the support and giving me this opportunity to be able to do this, and my girlfriend, Lauren, for supporting and helping me at the track and at home.”
