Buzzing the Tower—Mike Bowen’s Insane Wheelie

A Maverick buzzed the tower during the Haltech World Cup Finals back in October and Mike Bowen of Powerhouse Automotive piloted the low-flying vehicle. The NMRA Richmond Gear Factory Stock racer was entered in the ultra-competitive All Motor category with an outlaw setup that consisted of some “hot” fuel and several hundred pounds of weight removed. Bowen showed the front-wheel drive crowd why the NMRA is way cooler than sport compact racing when he stood his 1971 Ford Maverick on its bumper, getting all four wheels off the ground, and had a wild ride on the way back to the ground. The ensuing damage was mostly cosmetic with only a few odds and ends that needed to be replaced before Bowen could get back on track. His Coyote-powered Maverick completed qualifying with a best of 9.45 at 140 mph, but exited competition in the second round of eliminations.
