There is no arguing that the modern Cobra Jet gets it fair share of attention these pages and for those unaware, its legacy was born in 1968. The first group of 50 1968 Mustang Cobra Jet models began a storied history during the NHRA Winternationals of the same year, but production didn’t cease with that first batch. Ford continued to offer the Cobra Jet package for the 1968 Mustang to a variety of dealerships across the country.
A small town dealer in Rye, NY, some thirty minutes north of New York City, received its Cobra Jet allocation, immediately modified it, and Vinny Lyons and Benny Kaufman raced it all over the East Coast. Rye Ford sold the car to Lyons in 1969 and he has owned and raced it ever since. Lyons brought his rare Cobra Jet down to the Ford Motorsports to have some fun and ran in the Trick Flow Super Ford Showdown, before the rain ended the weekend’s festivities.
